Battle of Murfreesboro Confederate Memorial Service & dedication of new posts and flag pole.

Confederate Circle Evergreen Cemetery. Murfreesboro, Tennessee December 31st, 2:00 P.M. 2006

144th Anniversary of the Battle of Murfreesboro.

 Confederate Circle project.

The project to renew Confederate Circle has been in progress for nearly four years. The replacement posts are patterned after the original posts, but greatly improved. The originals were cast concrete, alternating tall and short. The date of placement is not known. A few had the abbreviation of the names of some of the Confederate states on top. Each post had a hole through it, which held a chain that once went around the circle. Several posts had been broken off.

The new posts are 6" X 6" granite, polished on two sides and the top, with two sides hewn. They too alternate tall and short, the 3' posts have the name of each Confederate state down front and back and the Confederate Battle Flag is engraved in the top. The 2' posts have CSA engraved down the front and back with the Southern Cross of honor on top. At the entrance are two posts with Confederate Circle down front and back, Confederate battle flag on top. A red rope passes through the holes in the new posts during memorial services.

The old 24' flagpole, which was placed in 1964 during the Civil War Centennial celebration, was actually two sections of galvanized water pipe with a brass toilet float on top! The new flag pole is 30' solid aluminum with an internal halyard, which makes flag replacement a lot easier a locking cover over the rope pulley and a spun brass ball on top. The base of the flagpole is black granite with the date of this memorial service.

Many thanks for the generous donations, participation in the fundraisers and volunteers that worked the events and helped labor on this project. We especially want to thank Brian Corley and Jim Roberts for their many hours of time and equipment. Brian, as Confederate Circle Committee Chairman, has spent many hours planning and coordinating the work for this project. Thanks!

DIXIE!

I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten,

Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.

In Dixie land where I was born in, early on a frosty mornin' ,

Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.

Chorus:

Then I wish I was in Dixie, hooray! Hooray!

In Dixie land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie,

Away, away, away down south in Dixie,

Away, away, away down south in Dixie.

Thars buckwheat cakes an' ingen batter, makes you fat or a little fatter,

Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.

Then hoe it down and scratch your grabble to Dixie's land I'm bound to travel,

Look away, look away, look away Dixie land.

Chorus:

Then I wish I was in Dixie, hooray! Hooray!

In Dixie land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie,

Away, away, away down south in Dixie,

Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
