C. R. Carter's 1874 Photo Album

Charles Richard Carter (b. April 28, 1856, d. April 1, 1925) collected an album of photographs of his friends and kin in 1874.  This album survives, tattered and worn but inscribed with his name and the date.  All of the images save two in the album are ferrotypes (tintypes) and are presented here in their original holders, which were carefully removed from the album for scanning.  Some of the images were identified on the album page, others on the image holder, and always in pencil.  A couple of the identifications were unreadable or smudged beyond recognition.  C. R. Carter's mother was Martha Ann Benson, and the Bensons pictured are presumably his cousins.  Click on any image below to view a larger version.
