Our dancing classes/sessions are usually held at the Pickering Community Center in Germantown, TN (suburb of Memphis) from 7 pm to 9 pm on the third Monday evening of every month. The cost is $2.00 per person/per class, to help defray the cost of room rental for the evening, Children 11 and under FREE.The Pickering Center is at 7765 Poplar Pike (corner of Old Poplar Pike and Melanie Smith Lane) near the Germantown Horse Show Arena and east of Germantown High School. (As a reference point, this location is about 2 miles south of Poplar Avenue and 1 mile east of Germantown Road).
Our dance classes are informal and allow us to wear casual, modern clothing while we dance to recorded, period CD music. Our music is supplied by the 52nd Regimental String Band.
We are instructed by a professional dancemaster who donates his time to help us along in learning the dances. These evenings have been designed to progressively teach newcomers and experienced dancers at the same time. No experience is necessary, as our dancemaster makes learning the steps quite easy and fun.
Formal Balls are held periodically throughout the year with live, period music. Beautifully-colored ball gowns and proper civilian clothing or military attire from the Civil War era is required for these events. However, on occasion, some evenings will allow the men to wear modern coats and ties, and the ladies to wear nice dresses.
